Homeschool Research Overview and Report

This is the Homeschool Research Tower of Homeschool Castle - also known as the Ivory Tower.

Ivory Tower, like Radar Tower, is also equipped with sophisticated scanning devices.

The scanning equipment in this particular tower has specifically been designed to trace and keep track of research and research reports relating to any aspect of homeschooling theory and practice. Radar Knight The staff of this tower evaluate all incoming reports and assess them in terms of their scientific accuracy and also their relevance to the theory and practice of homeschooling.

Home Educated and Now Adults: Their Community and Civic Involvement, Views About Homeschooling, and Other Traits

For nearly 20 years, critics and the curious have been asking about the homeschooled: But how will they do in the “real world” of adulthood? As a corollary, they have also asked: What about socialization?

This unique study takes a look at the lives of over 7,000 adults from across the United States who were home educated during their elementary and secondary school years.

The purpose of this study was to describe and gain more understanding about these adults.

  • In particular, the focus was on their general demographics, attitudes toward their own home-education experiences, and successes in life.
  • Success was evaluated with respect to civic, social, educational, employment, and worldview traits.
  • The target population was all adults in the United States who had been home educated, regardless of whether they thought positively or negatively about having been homeschooled.
  • A written survey (questionnaire) and follow-up interviews were used to gather information about the participants.

    Why Homeschooling Happened

    Teaching children at home is nothing new. Parents, extended family, and tutors have been doing so for ages. What’s new is that in recent decades increasing numbers of people have been teaching children at home as a self-conscious act of protest against mainstream society. Homeschooling is now a political movement. How did that happen? How did homeschooling go from being something that was done as a matter of course by thousands of Americans early in our history, to something that was hardly done at all as more and more Americans embraced formal schools, to something that has re-emerged in our time as a powerful educational alternative?
